The Perfect Burger

Author: Kelley Smith

Shake ShackA common misconception about organic food is that if you eat organic, especially meat, you will compromise taste. However, the organic burgers at Shake Shack and Elevation Burger are on a mission to prove this wrong. Many of my friends comment on how unusually delicious the cheeseburgers are when we visit these restaurants. They wonder out loud if there are extra spices used on the meat or if it is cooked differently.  Or maybe, just maybe, the magic begins on the farm and not in the kitchen.

Twitter Marketing

I follow a variety of brands on Twitter. They mostly consist of food related companies (@wholefoods and @foodnetwork), going green products (@sodastreamUSA), environment news outlets (@grist and @treehugger), up and coming science fiction novelists (@dahgmahn and @jonfmerz), fictional characters (@Lord_Voldemort7) and some of my favorite brands (@cococola, @NickelodenTV, and @nookBN).

But the Twitter feed that I find the most  interesting belongs to Tom Felton (@tomfelton). Felton tells me about his day, funny stories about his friends, and posts amusing pictures.  To an outsider, Felton looks like one of my closest friends tweeting to no more than a 50 people about his daily life. On the contrary, over 1 million people read these tweets everyday. It would probably be safe to assume that Felton has not even met over 80% of them. Because Tom Felton is Draco Malfoy from the movie adaptations of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter.

Harry Potter has defeated the Dark Lord.  Books have been read, movies have been seen, and an amusement park has been built.  Even though Hogwarts will live on in the hearts of millions, it may be time to start reading a new story and obsessing over a new piece of pop culture. Right?

Wrong.

Pottermore, JK Rowling’s newest project, is a website where she says fans will be able to experience the books like never before.  She explains that the site will be an interactive illustration companion to the books.  Fans will be able to play mini games, learn new things about the Wizarding World that were not explained in the books, and earn points to compete for the House Cup.  Fans will even be sorted into Houses by answering questions Rowling wrote herself. The site will be available in multiple languages and will be appropriate for all ages.  Rowling also makes it clear that while Pottermore is an interactive experience, the site is not designed to compete with Facebook, FanFiction, or any other Harry Potter fan sites.

The 90s Are All ThatEnough time has finally passed to allow the generation of kids who grew up in the 90s to look back.  This is the generation that gave the world social media.  Many of them, including me, are recent college graduates who are filling jobs that didn’t exist 5 years ago.  But they didn’t spend the past week sifting through jobs on Linked In.  This week, the boy wizard who shaped their childhood made box office history when it made $168 million opening weekend.   This may have been the conclusion of the of adventures of Harry, Ron, and Hermione but the 90s generation is clearly not giving up on the magic just yet. But is anyone listening?

Nickelodeon is.

A different kid of magic seems to have also captured this generation.  Over the past few years, 90s kids have been asking for their cartoons back.  They have joined fan made Facebook pages by the millions, tweeted about it, and searched for videos on YouTube.  For the most part, fans all had the same message: bring back 90′s Nickelodeon! A Facebook group titled I Want My 90′s Nickelodeon Back has  over 1,320,000 likes.  Shows like  Doug, Rugrats, and Hey Arnold! have over 4,000,000, 1,900,000, and 1,000,000 likes, respectively. This generation of consumers probably does not realize how seriously their causal and often misspelled commentary is taken. But when millions of fans create something this big, the message is hard to ignore. So what is a marketing department to do when a target market spells out exactly what it wants all over the internet?

MKTG 470: Semester in Review

Author: Kelley Smith

My Site Traffic

Using Google Analytics in my MKTG 470 class, I could see that my site was visited 205 this year. About 61% were new visitors. My sites was most visited on days that I announced new blog posts through social media sites. This strategy seemed to generate a lot of traffic as almost 50% of my traffic sources came from referring sites. Only 15% of my site traffic came from search engines so as I continue my site, I will work to improve my SEO efforts. Most of my visitors came from Virginia and other states where I have friends and family such as California and Pennsylvania. However, I also thought it was interesting that I got a few clicks from Canada, Saudi Arabia, India, and Australia. While these visitors did not stay long and likely found my site by accident, it was interesting to be reminded that people all over the world can find my site.

Internet Marketing

MKTG 470 Takeaways

MKTG 470 has helped me understand what goes into having great internet marketing. I especially liked learning how to use WordPress. In addition to just blogging, I enjoyed learning about the plugins and widgets that helped make my site even better. I also enjoyed using Google AdWords. This tool helped me understand that it is more important to have good quality keywords for a site than having as many words as possible. I have also found a greater appreciation for social media in the business world. I was not a big fan of Twitter before this class but now use it to keep up with my favorite companies, industry trends, and world news.

Internet Marketing In My Future

Before this class, I was very interested in web design. Now that I have learned more about how to optimize a website and internet marketing as a whole, I have realized how it important it is to have both a beautiful and functional website. I have enjoyed blogging very much in this class. It has given me an organized outlet to share my views on marketing and explore related topics online. I would like to continue this blog after this class is over with a focus on going green and my experiences starting my career.

It’s Easy Being Green

Author: Kelley Smith

Earth DayEarth Day began not too long ago in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson in an effort to give environmental issues higher importance on the national agenda.  The holiday was wildly successful as over 20 million Americans participated in various cities across the country.  Later that year, Congress authorized creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, designed to tackle environmental issues.

Today, in an effort to raise environmental awareness, many companies are using internet marketing to inform consumers and set higher standards for healthy living.

Whole Foods, a natural foods supermarket, has made it their mission to provide consumers with the best organic food and household products since 1980.  The company uses various forms of internet marketing to communicate with consumers.  On Facebook, visitors can find a featured healthy recipe and links to healthy eating ideas.  Consumers can also keep up with Whole Foods on Twitter (@WholeFoods) where the company actively answers customer questions about eating healthy every day.  Whole Foods also offers a blog called Whole Story with a number of contributors that discuss organic eating, cooking, body care products, and knowing how to recognize the best Earth friendly products.  This month, many of the posts have had a special focus on Earth Day.

Google Webmaster ToolsI really like turtles. Sometimes I Google the word “turtles” to find cool images to use as my desktop background. However, most of the time, I find these images of turtles on websites that have nothing to do with turtles. Maybe it is a website about kitchen items that have glassware with turtle patterns or a website about party theme ideas with an “Under the Sea” theme featured on the home page. So how do you know if certain keywords are leading the right visitors to your site?

Google Webmaster Tools is a great way to see if a website is being found by relevant keywords. For example, even though most of my impressions are coming from words like “cartoon” and “turtle,” with my recent SEO efforts, words like “James Madison Marketing” and “social media in the workplace” are gaining much more impressions. Google Webmaster Tools also shows the top keywords found on the website. If these words do not match the general theme of the blog or site, the webmaster can refine headings and body copy to attract the desired visitors. It is also helpful to see who is linking to the site. For example, if a lot of sites with a certain topic are visiting the site, the webmaster could create more pages or blog posts with relatable content to attract more links.

Google Webmaster Tools also allows the webmaster to upload a sitemap. This feature makes it easier for Google to locate pages that might be hard to find otherwise. To further organize the site, the webmaster can also set up sitelinks to the website’s interior pages. These links will appear in the search results, allowing visitors to go straight to the desires pages without visiting the home page first. These tools can be especially useful if the site is very large.

In contrast, the webmaster can also set up a robots.txt file to tell Google how to crawl the site. Google spiders will look for this information first before indexing the site. If unwanted information is appearing on Google, the webmaster can use the Remove URL tool to request removal or add a line to the robots.txt file to tell the spiders not to index it. Both the robots.txt file and the Remove URL tool are useful when handling private or out-of-date content.

After exploring Google Webmaster Tools, I would like to learn more about the malware and crawl errors tools.

Deb Van Horn from Rockingham GroupInternet marketing opens up opportunities that many forms of traditional marketing cannot.  Internet marketing offers a unique opportunity for two way communication.  Gone are the days when marketers could simply rely on ad after ad to help customers remember a product.  Internet marketing is allowing marketers to form a stronger, longer lasting relationship with customers.  Deb Van Horn, Vice President of Support Services at Rockingham Group, a regional insurance company for Virginia and Pennsylvania, offered great insight on how to measure the effectiveness of online marketing tools.

Using Facebook Tools

Ms. Van Horn spoke highly about the tools companies can use on Facebook to help see if their Facebook page is working effectively.  These tools can help companies look beyond just the comments and likes posted on the wall. First, companies can see the activity of people who “like” the page on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.  This can help the company see when people are interacting with the page.  Ms. Van Horn talked about how important this is because many people are not checking Facebook during normal business hours.  In many cases, the Facebook page will need to be monitored on weekends and after hours to keep up with the traffic.

Another important piece of information provided by Facebook is the demographics of the people who “like” the page.  This information can help companies target their Facebook ads.  It can also be compared to the demographics of the company’s clients to see if it matches.  If it does not, the company can use this information to indentify new markets or better target current markets.

Effective Internet Ads

Before a company can decide if a certain site is a good spot for an advertisement, Ms. Van Horn suggested considering the following:

  • How many people visit the site daily?
  • What are the demographics of the people who visit the site?
  • What link is going to be provided in the ad?

Asking these questions can help the company decided if their ad will be effective on a specific site.  Ms. Van Horn also emphasized that it is important to properly understand the metrics used to determine the success of internet ads.  These metrics include the following:

  • Impressions: How many times the ad is visible to users.
  • Clicks: How many times a users click an ad to visit the advertised link.
  • Click Through Rate (CTR): the number of clicks divided by the number of impressions.
  • Average CPM: the cost per 1000 impressions.

These metrics can help companies see if their ad is reaching the right market and leading customers to where they want to be.

I greatly appreciate Ms. Van Horn for taking the time to speak to our Internet Marketing class.  I have learned much more about using social media in my professional career.

It’s Not About The Shoes

Author: Kelley Smith

American Marketing Association“It’s not about the shoes,” Tom Martin, Founder of Converse Digital, began his presentation “How to Get a Job in Advertising Today” at the 2011 International Collegiate Conference hosted by the American Marketing Association this weekend.  Martin illustrated his point further by describing how Michael Jordan isn’t the best basketball player because he wears Nike shoes.  Just like Jordan, college students cannot expect to land a job by just showing up to the interview in great shoes.  We cannot simply dress the part, we must be the part.  But how do we be the part? Tom Martin offers some helpful tips.

1.       Life is not a scantron: Martin explains that it’s unfortunate that many of our assessments in school are scantron tests that rely on strict memorization.  He explains that it’s more important to be good at problem solving and thinking critically because there are no scantron tests in the workplace.

2.       Ask better questions: Asking better questions at recruiting events and during interviews will help get better answers.  Plus, it will show the recruiter you know how to think critically.  Martin suggests asking questions about the duties and objectives during the first month of the job.  This shows that you are driven and truly interested in the helping the company.

3.       Do your research: The internet is a college student’s most under-used tool when it comes to company research. Company websites, social media, and industry reports can provide great information about a company’s clients, employees, competitors, as well as industry trends and world news.  It doesn’t take much to learn a few facts – just the click of a mouse.

4.       Have an Opinion: Martin explains that we will all be “doers” in our entry level jobs.  We will spend our first years learning and doing tasks given to us by upper level management.  However, the company needs to know during the interview that they can eventually promote you to be a “thinker.” The company wants you to be able to form your own opinions, even if you are wrong,  and be a great manager someday.

5.       Say Thank You: It is always important to thank the employer for their time.  However, Martin explains that the best way to do this is in a handwritten note or in an afterhours voicemail.  He says that this is not done enough and shows that you are truly interested in the position.

6.       Be Passionate: Passion is the most important part in the industry.  It is important to think about questions such as “What is your favorite ad campaign and why” as well as “What is a bad ad campaign you have see lately?”  These questions will help employers see how much you love the industry.

After a wonderful weekend of marketing in New Orleans and listening to variety of great speaking including Tom Martin, I truly feel that I have picked the right industry to build my career.

Not Just A Pretty Face

Organic ShampooHave you ever read the ingredients on the back of your shampoo bottle? How many of those ingredients can you identify or even pronounce? Many of the ingredients found in shampoos, lotions, cosmetics, and other personal care products are loaded with toxic chemicals that we don’t even know about!

If you ordered dinner in a foreign country but could not read all of the ingredients, you would probably ask the waiter for clarification.  We want to know what kind of food we are putting into our body. So why don’t we also care about what we are putting on our body and ask the cosmetic companies for clarification?  Parabens, one of the chemicals found in many cosmetic products, has been found in many breast cancer patients.  While these studies are new and highly debated, it is important that we ask the right questions to make sure our personal care products are safe to use.

Most people are simply unaware of the dangers of these chemicals. Words like “natural” and “organic” are so loosely defined by our government that the cosmetic companies don’t have to be honest with their information.  However, there are many organizations that are trying to help Americans make more informed decisions when it comes to personal care products.  The Environmental Working Group created The Cosmetic Safety Database that allows consumers to see how toxic or how organic a certain product is.  The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics also strives to inform consumers of the dangers of using certain personal care products.  They also encourage consumers to get more involved and urge the government to pass laws requiring that cosmetic companies find other, less harmful chemicals to use in their products.

Even if you decide you are willing to accept the risk of Parabens and other chemicals, remember the big picture.  The factory workers that product these products breathe in these chemicals every day.  Workers in beauty salons also cannot escape the chemicals.  The chemicals also find their way to our landfills when we dispose of these products.  These chemicals are not only affecting the individuals who use them but the environment in which we live.

In addition to simply encouraging consumers to make more educated and healthier choices, this is a great opportunity for marketers of already truly organic products. Many companies have already created great advertising campaign for their fiber packed, whole grain, or veggie filled products.  Marketers could design creative advertising campaigns to change the consumers’ perspectives of personal care products.  Personal care products need to be chosen based on safety and marketers could help begin the shift toward a safer cosmetic industry.
